There are over 110 + cannabinoids in the mighty, beneficial hemp plant and the top two most scientifically researched cannabinoids are THC and CBD.
When it comes to THC, hemp is federally regulated to contain less than 0.3% THC. Of course that refers to delta 9 THC due to its psychoactive effects. However, delta 8 THC and delta 10 THC are another matter!
The thing is, recently hemp product businesses are booming with sales of delta 8 THC and delta 10 THC flower and other products and there are good reasons why.
So, what is delta 8 THC and delta 10 THC flower exactly, why are they legal and will I get high?
How are they different from delta 9 THC?
What is the difference between delta 8 & delta 10 THC and why does it matter?
Here we go- keep reading to find out!
Delta 8 & Delta 10 THC Similarities and Differences
Both delta 8 and delta 10 THC are found naturally in trace amounts in the cannabis plant (including the hemp variety).
Although they both have psychoactive effects like delta 9 THC, they are substantially less potent.
Also, since hemp derived delta 8 and delta 10 THC are only naturally occurring in the plant in extremely small amounts, experts process them both in a lab from hemp derived CBD.
Delta 10 and delta 8 have a similar chemical structure to delta 9 THC. However, the difference lies in the location of the double carbon bonds in the carbon chain, it is this position that determines their names. Delta 10 has its double carbon bond on the 10th carbon chain and delta 8 on the 8th, with delta 9 positioned on the 9th.
This difference in carbon chain positions makes a substantial difference in the level of psychoactivity. Like, delta 9 THC, delta 8 and delta 10 bind with the CB1 receptors of the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for their psychoactive effects. However, although delta 8 and delta 10 also have binding activity with the CB1 receptor, they have a substantially milder effect than delta 9 THC.
Delta 8 is anecdotally claimed to be around 50% milder in psychoactivity than delta 9 and delta 10 is considered a bit milder than delta 8.
So, yes, you do feel high on both delta 8 and delta 10 THC, however, they do have a difference in their overall effects.
